My PhD project, ‘Ideal rulership between insular and Carolingian worlds’, situates early medieval royal advice literature in its social and cultural context. It compares Carolingian advice, understood as part of the culture of admonition and spiritual improvement, with advice from the insular world, particularly Ireland. Through this comparison, both political cultures can be better understood. It employs digital text analysis methods to supplement close reading, which remains the thesis’ main methodology.

I’m also currently working on a side project around the rulership of Pippin I (and to a lesser extent II) of Aquitaine, with a focus on reassessing the historiographical construct of subkingship.
