Sherman Clarke replied to the topic Reclassification Project – Books on Native American Artists in the forum Cataloging Section on ARLISNA Commons 2 months, 2 weeks ago
Caroline–
In the grand historical scheme of art history as represented in the N schedule, chronology is divided into three ages: ancient, medieval, and modern. Modern in most of N means post-medieval to the present day. That breakdown becomes (particularly) problematic when you are dealing with art outside of the “western” canon.I think the…[Read more]

Sherman Clarke replied to the topic Forming cutter numbers using Table N6 for artists in the discussion Cataloging Section on ARLISNA Commons 7 months, 1 week ago
If you give A6 to Ginevra de’ Benci and A61 to Head of a woman, and then get a resource on a Leonardo work entitled Glorious Madonna (made-up title, of course), you would want to cutter it between A6 (Gi…) and A61 (Head), so maybe A604 which is awkward. Yes, I as cataloger am making up cutters between A6 and A79 to put the Leonardo works in…[Read more]

Sherman Clarke replied to the topic Forming cutter numbers using Table N6 for artists in the discussion Cataloging Section on ARLISNA Commons 7 months, 1 week ago
La Scapiliata would get a higher A in the range, based on the title word Scapiliata. LC/NAF has that work established as his Head of a woman (Parma, Italy) so it should file under H. Ginevra de’ Benci would get a lower A, before Head of a woman and Last Supper. Mona Lisa would get a higher A than Last Supper but lower than Savior of the World.…[Read more]

Rachel–
Each work by a given artist should get a cutter between A6-79. A second
resource on that work would get the same cutter plus a date. Leonardo’s
Last Supper would ideally be about midway between A6 and A79.LC has a bunch of books on Guernica in ND553.P5 A66 and date. If two
resources are published in the same year, the date would be…[Read more] -
