The aim of the Russian Music Theory Interest Group (SMT-Rus) is to discuss, promote, and engage with Russian theoretical traditions, which offer new approaches to musical meaning, harmony, voice leading, and form, with a special emphasis on topics little studied by Western scholars, including functional modality and tonal mutability. This interest group was inaugurated at the 2013 meeting of the Society for Music Theory in Charlotte, NC.

Call for Lighting Talks: “Russian and Soviet Music in Times of Military Aggression”

The Russian Music Theory Interest Group (SMT-Rus) is inviting proposals for its meeting at the 2023 AMS/SMT Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado (November 9–12) on the subject, “Russian and Soviet Music in Times of Military Aggression.” Presentations will be 15-minute lightning talks.

Topics may include–but are not limited to–the following:

      • Current political climate in Russia (modernist post-Soviet space) and its effect on the Russian music scene
      • Political climate in the pre-1917 Russian Empire and its effect on Russian composers/musicians/music theorists/other notable figures in music
      • Political climate during the Soviet Union and its effect on Soviet composers/musicians/music theorists/other notable figures in music
      • Selected Russian/Soviet works that have been influenced and/or inspired by the political climate
      • Selected Russian/Soviet music-theoretical texts that demonstrate political influence, and consideration of said influence on the reading and implementation of specific texts
      • Consideration of the political-social context at large in analyses of Russian/Soviet works

We envision the panel to feature a series of 15-minute lighting talks, followed by general discussion. Please email abstracts of 250 words, together with a brief bio (ca. 150 words) to adrozzin@pfw.edu. In your email, please include the subject line “SMT-Rus Proposal 2023.” The deadline for submission is Monday, August 7. Accepted proposers will be notified by Monday, September 4. Accepted speakers will be expected to participate in person at the 2023 AMS/SMT Annual Meeting in Denver, Colorado (November 9–12, 2023).
