The aim of the Russian Music Theory Interest Group (SMT-Rus) is to discuss, promote, and engage with Russian theoretical traditions, which offer new approaches to musical meaning, harmony, voice leading, and form, with a special emphasis on topics little studied by Western scholars, including functional modality and tonal mutability. This interest group was inaugurated at the 2013 meeting of the Society for Music Theory in Charlotte, NC.

      Dear SMT-Rus members,

I hope that you are staying safe, and that you enjoyed a nice and refreshing summer! I am excited to announce that this year, SMT-Rus will meet jointly with the Pedagogy Interest Group, chaired by Leigh VanHandel. The topic is “Russian Pedagogy of Music Theory.” We are now seeking presenters to fill the roughly hour-long time slot, on Friday at 5:45 during SMT meeting. If you have ever worked on a topic related to this theme, you are most welcome to present your thoughts!

Topics may include—but are not limited to—the following:

      • Russian textbooks on any music theory subject, or on music more generally
      • Structure of the Russian/Soviet music-educational system
      • Pedagogical applications of theoretical ideas from well-known Russian theorists, or pedagogical aspects of such theorists’ work
      • Practical aspects of teaching written theory and aural skills in the Russian tradition
      • Use of examples from Russian music in music theory or aural skills teaching
      • Aspects of political or cultural issues when teaching about Russian music

In short, anything that has to do with teaching and with Russian theory or Russian music is a good enough topic!

This is not a call for proposals in the formal sense; if you have an idea and enough material for 5-10 minutes, please send a short description of your topic to ellen.bakulina@unt.edu and leigh.vanhandel@ubc.ca, and we will put together a session from the submissions. We ask that you send your submissions no later than September 15.

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Ellen Bakulina, University of North Texas

Leigh VanHandel, University of British Columbia
