The aim of the Russian Music Theory Interest Group (SMT-Rus) is to discuss, promote, and engage with Russian theoretical traditions, which offer new approaches to musical meaning, harmony, voice leading, and form, with a special emphasis on topics little studied by Western scholars, including functional modality and tonal mutability. This interest group was inaugurated at the 2013 meeting of the Society for Music Theory in Charlotte, NC.

      Dear friends,

I hope you all are surviving in this crazy time! Below is a CFP for the upcoming SMT-Rus meeting at SMT 2020.

The Russian Music Theory Interest Group (SMT-Rus) invites proposals for lightning talks for the meeting at SMT 2020. The topics may include

      • Theoretical/analytical materials originally written in the Russian language, and
      • Studies of music written by composers who originate from Russian-speaking lands.

The proposals should be no more than 300 words, with a maximum three pages of supplementary materials (including bibliography and examples). Deadline: July 17, 2020. Please send the proposals to Ellen Bakulina, SMT-Rus chair, at Ellen.Bakulina@unt.edu.Depending on the number of accepted proposals, the talks will be 10 or 15 minutes long. Please note that the talks may need to be presented electronically, if SMT 2020 is in online format.

A little addition to the CFP: some of you expressed interest in holding a seminar-style music-analytical discussion in place of paper presentations. This is a great idea, but I thought it might be good to postpone this to a later year, since the 2020 SMT meting might be completely online, and a discussion on Zoom might involve technical and other problems.
