The aim of the Russian Music Theory Interest Group (SMT-Rus) is to discuss, promote, and engage with Russian theoretical traditions, which offer new approaches to musical meaning, harmony, voice leading, and form, with a special emphasis on topics little studied by Western scholars, including functional modality and tonal mutability. This interest group was inaugurated at the 2013 meeting of the Society for Music Theory in Charlotte, NC.

The Russian Music Theory Interest Group (SMT-Rus) invites proposals for lightning talks on microtonality.

Russia and, later, the Soviet Union have rich histories of the development of microtonality (or quarter tonality). Ivan Wyschnegradsky’s treatise on quarter tonality (1932) has been instrumental in the development of quarter-tonal compositions, especially in France. While Wyschnegradsky’s writings and quarter-tone compositions influenced the post-WWII European and American composers, the Soviet Union also experienced important developments in musical experimentations with timbre and tuning, which include the writings and works of Georgy Rimsky-Korsakov (Nikolai’s grandson) and Arseny Avraamov, among others.

If you are working on this topic, please submit an abstract for a ten-minute lightning talk. We are interested in any aspect of the development of microtonality by Russian/Soviet composers/theorists within and outside of the Soviet Union. We welcome both historical and analytical approaches to this topic. The session will include presentations by Inessa Bazayev and Gabrielle Cornish on aspects of microtonality, and we welcome other paper proposals on the topic.

Please send your name, title of presentation, and a 150-word abstract to <ibazayev@lsu.edu>. Submissions may include up to 2 musical examples. Please make sure all parts of your submission come in a single pdf document.  Deadline: Friday 24 June, 11:59 pm (EST).

Adjudicators: Ellen Bakulina, Inessa Bazayev, Gabrielle Cornish
