The Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group is a discursive space for scholars of music after 1945, with an emphasis on the modernist, experimental, and avant-garde. Through its annual meetings and online communications, the group aims to strengthen, support, and develop its members’ ideas and sense of community. It also seeks to bring attention to and foster scholarship on post-1945 music both within the Society for Music Theory and in music scholarship at large.

      Hi everyone,

It has now been a couple months since our meeting in Denver. It was wonderful to see everyone and enjoy some thought-provoking scholarship presented by Kate Mancey, Noah Kahrs, and Jennifer Iverson. Thanks to all of those who presented and all those who attended!

We also announced the two winners of the Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group Publication Award: Landon Morrison’s “Encoding Post-Spectral Sound: Kaija Saariaho’s Early Electronic Music at IRCAM, 1982–87” and Mariusz Kozak’s “Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s Violin Phase and the Experience of Time, or Why Does Process Music Work?” both published in Music Theory Online. Congratulations to Landon and Mariusz, and many thanks to our Publication Award Committee: Benjamin Levy (chair), Jocelyn Ho, and Abigail Shupe.

Information about submitting nominations for the next cycle of the award will be announced soon, so stay tuned!

After some conferencing, we have two wonderful nominees to take over as co-chairs for the Post-1945 Music Analysis IG for the next two years, Gui Hwan Lee and Noah Kahrs. Thank you all for your patience as we perform this change of leadership. In order to officially inaugurate Gui Hwan and Noah, we will have a confirmation vote using the Google form linked below. This will require you to log in to a Google account, but the ballot will not collect any personal information from you, only your confirmations. Please follow the link to confirm our new co-chairs. Confirmation voting will close in two weeks.
