The Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group is a discursive space for scholars of music after 1945, with an emphasis on the modernist, experimental, and avant-garde. Through its annual meetings and online communications, the group aims to strengthen, support, and develop its members’ ideas and sense of community. It also seeks to bring attention to and foster scholarship on post-1945 music both within the Society for Music Theory and in music scholarship at large.

Dear members of the Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group,

For those of you that missed the announcement at our recent business meeting during the conference, please join me in congratulating the winner of the 2022 Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group Publication Award, Jocelyn Ho!

Please see below for the full announcement from the award committee. Huge thanks go out to the members of the committee: Tara Boyle (chair), Drake Andersen, and Sumanth Gopinath!

      My best,

      Will Ayers

The Post-1945 Music Analysis Interest Group Publication Award Committee is delighted to announce the winner of our 2022 award. Jocelyn Ho’s “Corporeal Musical Structure: A Gestural-Kinesthetic Approach to Tōru Takemitsu’s Rain Tree Sketch II (published in Music Theory Online, Nov. 2021) applies an embodied, self-reflexive approach to the analysis of a solo piano composition by Tōru Takemitsu. Drawing on literature from performance studies, phenomenology, and Laban dance theory, Ho foregrounds the performing body and asks incisive questions about what it can tell us about musical structure.

      Committee:

Antares Boyle (chair), Drake Andersen (2021 award winner), Sumanth Gopinath (2021 award winner)
