About

I was born in Hertfordshire in 1963 but spent most of my childhood in Bexhill-on-Sea on the coast of East Sussex. Since 1995 I have taught in the Archaeology Department of University of Wales Lampeter (Now Trinity St David), The Celtic and Scottish History Departments at the University of Edinburgh (1997-2001), and in the School of History at the University of St Andrews. Interdisciplinarity has always been at the core of my academic work.

Education

After a false start studying Scandinavian Studies at UCL in 1982-3, I graduated from the University of Sheffield with a degree in Medieval English and Medieval History in 1989.

I gained an M.Phil. in Archaeology form the same University in 1992 and subsequently undertook doctoral research in Archaeology at Sheffield until 1995. This did not result in the awarding of a degree. I was, however, awarded a doctorate by portfolio by St Andrews in 2010.
