About

My interest in written academic genres is a direct result of the years I have spent as an editor and translator for a health-research institute located in Madrid, Spain, where I am based. This exposure has given me a first-hand look at many of the linguistic and interpersonal issues taken up in the literature on English for academic purposes and English for research and publication purposes, and when researching I seek to optimize my somewhat unique perspective. In my view, continuous dialogue between research and practice is essential to the advancement of theoretical and empirical understanding on the one side and quality language support on the other. This is why my primary research interests include ethnographic approaches to research writing and studies on the role played by editors and translators like myself in English-medium academic publishing. Beyond my work and research involving non-native-English-speaking academics, I recently added Spanish for specific purposes as a field of interest and hope to contribute to existing knowledge on the teaching of Spanish for professionals working within health care.
