This story is the culmination of a three year investigation into some Nazi-lootd art I discovered at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida. The works are woodblock prints by Franz Marc, “Schöpfungsgeschicte II” (1914) and “Geburt der Pferde” (1913) that had been seized as Entartete Kunst from the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, and had been sold by notorious Kunsthandler Bernhard A. Böhmer to an American journalist, Robert Beattie in 1940. Beattie donated them to the Ringling in 1956, where they have been hidden from the public ever since.
