Assignment for the Data Information and Technologies (DITA) module INM348 for the Library and Information Science Masters, at the City University of London, taught by Dr Lyn Robinson. This essay gives an introductory analysis of some of the problems associated with the increased use of social media, focusing on Facebook and Twitter and the rise of these technologies with particular relevance to LIS. It includes analysis of user behaviours and impact and ethical perspectives which are presented using a Floridian framework. It includes examples of Shakespeare as a proto-troll, political evidence and discussions surrounding educational and social impact on students today to make the case that both social media providers and users have an ethical obligation to consider safety and codes of conduct when entering into digital information exchanges to remain safe online.
