• The Survival of a People lab takes its name from The Puerto Rican Diaspora: Themes in the Survival of a People by renowned documentarian Frank Espada. Between 1979-1981, Espada led a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) funded project documenting the lives, cultural organizations, and Puerto Rican community roots through nearly 130 interviews across the diaspora. Our lab is dedicated to making the interviews publically accessible. This section will engage with the recordings and portraits of Edelmiro Huertas and Lila Calderon De Romero (Greater Bay Area) and Angie Echevarria (Los Angeles) for a close reading of the digital archive and transcription process.
