Megan Lavengood deposited Timbre, Rhythm, and Texture within Music Theory’s White Racial Frame on Humanities Commons 1 year ago
This chapter discusses music theory’s neglect of EDM as it relates to the dominant methodologies of the field and Philip Ewell’s concept of the white racial frame, arguing that EDM is overlooked due to implicit biases against racial Otherness and against technological mediation, biases that runs deep enough in US culture to have impacted the tra…[Read more]

Megan Lavengood deposited Bespoke Music Theory: A Modular Core Curriculum Designed for Audio Engineers, Classical Violinists, and Everyone in Between in the group
Society for Music Theory – Popular Music Interest Group (SMT PMIG) on Humanities Commons 2 years, 5 months ago
Traditional music theory curricula are increasingly scrutinized. Students regularly misunderstand the scope of epistemology and scope of theory, find theory intimidating and difficult, and fail to see its relevance to their career goals. In this essay, I outline a modular music theory curriculum, which works to address these negative perceptions…[Read more]

Thank you Marc and Keith for the excellent concrete ideas. I’ll think on these a bit more and I’m certain I’ll use one of them in this exam.
To respond to some more of your side discussion Keith—I’ve done this discussion with the associate director, the grad director, and the jazz studies director. My understanding is that we have standard r…[Read more]

Hi Keith, it’s meant to test their ability to think on their feet, analytically. I want to see them closely analyze a piece of music in some way that is well-informed and intelligent. The point is that they can’t do a lot of background research first, but what can they come up with anyway, just based on their experience as an educated musician?…[Read more]

Society for Music Theory – Jazz Interest Group on Humanities Commons 2 years, 10 months ago
Hi! I’m not usually a participant in this group but wanted to solicit some expert advice. I administer DMA comprehensive exams at my school. The format of the exam is very open-ended; I just ask students to analyze two pieces. One of the pieces will be 17th–19th century classical music; the other piece will be 20th–21st c. Students are exp…[Read more]
