Hi David, excellent question! John makes a great suggestion with OATP, which is really useful in keeping up with new announcements and current developments. The difficulty with any online list is keeping it up to date — as you note, there are a lot of new initiatives like Path To Open launching at the moment. My colleague Tom Grady and I recently published a two-part blog post talking about how librarians can assess and categorise these models. It includes links to various lists that others have put together, and offers a way of grouping the different models into types (borrowed from Sharla Lair of LYRASIS) which can help to get your head around the landscape. Teaming that categorisation approach with a source for alerts about new models (such as OATP) might be the way to go.

Hi all, next Thursday (17th November) at 3pm GMT we’re looking forward to speaking with OABN stalwart Eric Hellman at our next boOkmArks event, about his work with Project Gutenberg and Distributed Proofreaders and how these experiences have informed his perspectives on the early days of open access and more recent developments in OA books.
Eric has kindly written a blog post to introduce what he’ll be speaking about:
The OG of Open Access is Project Gutenberg. Before the Kindle, before the web, before the PC, Michael Hart started typing in “texts” and making them available online. For free, though you had to pay for the phone time. The original ebook was never meant to be the clunky reader gadgets that corporations were trying to sell, it was bits you could get online. Project Gutenberg invented the ebook as we know it.
That post is available here: https://openaccessbooksnetwork.hcommons.org/2022/11/09/lessons-from-project-gutenberg-og-oa/
And the signup for the event is here: https://us06web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZIudeCvpzopHN0shaqzdmN8g1M_UtYz0UxP
We hope to see you there!

ACLS is hiring a Project Manager, Higher Education Initiatives: Publishing Initiatives (2-year term) based in New York, to ‘focus on instigating changes in the book publishing ecosystem that would strengthen the goals of the mission-driven constituencies involved, while addressing the risk factors and constituents’ concerns that currently stand as barriers to change.’

Hi all, Tom, Agata and I are pleased to announce that the OABN has become an OPERAS Special Interest Group (SIG), and as such it is now formally supported by OPERAS, the European Research Infrastructure supporting open scholarly communication in the social sciences and humanities (SSH) in the European Research Area.
The OABN will continue to organise ourselves and plan our activities independently as we always have (and as ever we welcome thoughts, ideas, event proposals etc from any member of the network) and thanks to this affiliation with OPERAS we will now also receive administrative support to help us better serve our communities, and we will be able to form stronger links with people and organisations in the European open research landscape.
More details about this, including how you can get involved in the SIG if you wish, can be found here: https://openaccessbooksnetwork.hcommons.org/2022/04/04/open-access-books-network-becomes-an-operas-special-interest-group/

I’ve been doing some more digging into accessibility resources and have found the following:
– Improving the Accessibility of your Mainstream Digital Content, which seems to be a wealth of resources from the Inclusive Publishing group, coordinated by the DAISY consortium: https://inclusivepublishing.org/about-the-inclusive-publishing-hub/
– The UK Publisher’s Association have an Accessibility Action Group chaired by Stacy Scott of the RNIB (you have to scroll down to find it on this page, which is ironically not optimally accessible): https://www.publishers.org.uk/about-us/groups/
– This group has a SURVEY FOR UK PUBLISHERS about accessibility, which closes on 14 April: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScnnLBESstCG57jlKsKbin5ND8cnsgrwZ0MGHlApjuNjDLAjg/viewform
– EPUB Accessibility Using InDesign, an online tutorial housed on LinkedIn which @lucabaffa recommends: https://www.linkedin.com/learning/epub-accessibility-using-indesign
– Stephanie Rosen, Accessibility Strategist & Librarian for Disability Studies at the University of Michigan library has written an OA book on Accessibility and Publishing: https://www.fulcrum.org/concern/monographs/7h149r486
– …and she also gave a ten-minute keynote at Munin on Innovations in Accessible Scholarly Communication which can be watched online: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogrCW9M1h70 (this keynote itself includes a number of references to helpful resources from 5 mins 14 secs in) -

This channel was set up after the Open Cafe discussion on the accessibility of OA books, at which a number of links were shared, so I will drop them here for future reference:
– EU directive on accessibility, coming into force in 2025: https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A32019L0882
– OAPEN VPAT: https://oapen.org/oapen/5664198-accessibility
– While originally aimed at OER production, this might also be useful for OA presses: https://opentextbc.ca/accessibilitytoolkit/
– The DAISY consortium: https://daisy.org/
– Ubiquity accessibility statement: https://www.ubiquitypress.com/site/accessibility-statement/
– OMP – couldn’t easily find accessibility statements for books but they do have accessibility information for journals: https://docs.pkp.sfu.ca/accessible-content/en/

Hi Emma,
My colleague Laura at OBP confirms that our approach is similar to Sebastian’s. We:
– Archive old editions (and state ‘Archived’ on the title. See: https://www.openbookpublishers.com/product/1096)
– Delete prices and purchase options to avoid readers purchasing an edition that is not up to date.
– Provide back and forward links between versions.
– Create new cover images with information about the new edition (either by stating ‘New Edition’ or by updating the year as with WWIC)
– Each edition has its own DOI and ISBNs.
– Readership: we state how many times previous eitions were accessed/read as to avoid losing readership data and provide the reader with a better overview. All best,
Lucy

Hi all, a blog post reflecting upon the outcomes of the Voices from the OA Books Community series is available to view here, and you can download the document that summarises the discussions here. This summary was shared with cOAlition S. We note that cOAlition S have recognised the OABN as a useful forum for community engagement in their statement released today, and we’re delighted that the effort made by the OABN community to engage constructively with cOAlition S has been recognised in this way. We look forward to exploring ways to foster more such constructive engagement via the OABN in future. All our forthcoming activities will continue to be announced via this Humanities Commons group and our website, as well as on Twitter (@oabooksnetwork).

Hi all,
Just a quick note to flag that we’ve switched off the Events calendar function on the site. People weren’t engaging with it, so instead of spending time updating it we’ll be focused on coordinating talks and workshops, fostering discussion, and making more people aware of this network. Anyone interested in a calendar of OA events might like to check out the Open Research Calendar: https://openresearchcalendar.github.io (or @OpenResearchCal on Twitter).
Soon we’ll be announcing some new events and asking for your feedback on what you’d like to see from the OABN in the coming months, so watch this space…
All best,
Lucy

Hi Philippa, I’d be happy to discuss this — at OBP we have been approached by people interested in translating our OA books and I could talk through how we deal with this. Essentially, if the book is licensed CC BY then anyone can produce a translation as long as appropriate attribution is given, although it would also be best practice to say whether the translation has been approved by the original author or publisher, or not. If the license is not CC BY, or if you would like to publish an approved translation, then there would be other issues to consider. I’d be happy to talk it through further here on the boards or via email (lucy@openbookpublishers.com).

Just to follow up here (and not intended to hijack the thread) but does anyone know if there has been an effort to collate a resource that sets out publisher policies on this issue? We had a question about OA books and doctoral theses at the Frankfurt Book Fair panel on the OAPEN OA Books Toolkit, and it’s sparked a discussion on Twitter (https://twitter.com/alittleroad/status/1316753344384454660?s=20) about the potential usefulness of such a resource.
Would be good to know if anything like this exists, or if anyone would be interested in trying to create it!

Hi Hans,
This is possibly not what you’re after, but I did find a list of resources from UKRIO about this topic: https://ukrio.org/research-integrity-resources/research-integrity-resources/open-access-and-doctoral-theses/
Hopefully others will have something more longform/authoritative (thanks for flagging that manual; I hadn’t come across it before).
All best,
Lucy

Hi Markus, this is really interesting, thanks for sharing. I was wondering, are all the 20 projects linked in some way, or are you all independent of each other?
