Abstract: This article discusses the history of migration and biographical research in order to combine the respective theories and concepts associated with these research fields. While migration history often emphasizes societal structures, biography frequently focuses on white, male, western (and sedentary) subjects. In contrast, the author suggests linking migration history and biography using the concepts of intersectionality and collective biography. The article discusses theoretical debates on biography, migration history, intersectionality, and collective biography. In conclusion, the author argues that transnational, ‘translocal’ or migrant biographies can combine macro-, meso-, and microlevels in order to analyze the agency of people in motion and entanglements with local, regional, national or global contexts, as well as social inequalities.
