I think about prepositions a lot. I had to memorize a list of them in grade school—maybe fifth grade? I have a vestigial memory of my fifth grade teacher reciting them at us. Aboard, about above, at, behind, b […]

On page 4 of The Artist’s Way, which, in the company of a robust virtual writers’ group, I spent the beginning of the semester sporadically working through, Julia Cameron wrote something that jumped out and […]

[I have so many writing projects right now, most importantly three in-progress diss chapters, and so these musings may be scattered and will be quick. The topic is a theme I keep coming back to in various ways, so […]

Movement 1: Pause
I hate the word deadline: it’s so demoralizing. It loses belief in you before you’ve even begun. But this week was the first week in ages […] -

I started thinking about this post and writing it in my head (where most of the things I write like to start out) three weeks ago, right after a meeting with my chair. I then pushed the To Do of writing the post […]

Last time I wrote here was before the inauguration (small I), and I don’t have to say whose. And I won’t. I am one who believes that saying the name of a person means that you are remembering and honoring them, […]

I’m unable to stop reading the news. I told myself a couple of weeks ago that I’d like to try reading more headlines and fewer articles, and I’ve succeeded to some degree, but that’s mostly because Black Twitter […]

Happy first week of January, all! A lot has happened since I last wrote in May (oof). I took and passed my second (oral) exam, which was a big relief, and which means I’m officially a Ph.D candidate. I’d been both […]

The experience of editing this volume has taught me so much. As a doctoral candidate, I write constantly, and as an assistant editor for the journals Harlot and Kairos, as well as a freelance editor, I edit […]

Growth in Writing, Teaching, and Learning
In his classic composition text Writing Without Teachers, Peter Elbow asks us to consider the metaphor of growing as a way to encourage and teach fluid, flexible writing. The idea of growth…[Read more]

As many of you will have heard, Resolution 2014-1 got 60% of the votes cast but did not reach the minimum of 10% of the total membership required (by a recent rule) in order to be officially adopted. Thank you to all who voted. I attach an op-ed by David Lloyd that to my mind gives a good sense of the meaning of the event:

Thank you to everyone who voted on resolution 2014-1. As you will have heard, the resolution got 60% of the votes in its favor but did not pass because it did not reach the minimum of 10% of the membership required (by a recent rule). This still counts as a major victory. I attach an op-ed by David Lloyd:

Prove participatory citizenship is still alive! Vote on the MLA resolution! Last 8 hours!

Please forgive me for being exceedingly tedious on the subject of the vote, which ends at midnight tonight. The bar of 10% of the membership that resolutions have to pass is a relatively new one, and arguably not a good one, given the general indifference (which those who proposed it probably were counting on). But it is still possible to prove…[Read more]

I’m writing to encourage people to vote on the Israel resolution (right of entry for Americans of Palestinian and Arab descent). I co-sponsored it, so obviously I believe it’s a good and fair and appropriate thing, but I think you will agree if you take a moment to look it over. Voting ends at midnight on Sunday. traditionally MLA resolutions hav…[Read more]

Please forgive this graceless appeal. The Israel resolution (Right to Enter) that I co-sponsored with Dick Ohmann is now being voted on. I think it’s a moderate and necessary gesture of support for our Palestinian and Arab colleagues who, though US citizens, have been denied entry to the West Bank to teach, do research, lecture, or attend…[Read more]

I’m among the 1500, but what worries me more than the opposition is the apathy of those who did not care to cast any vote. Not that we are much different here in Poland… Thank you for your post.
