About

Hello! My name is Beth, and I am a first year PhD student in English Literature at the University of Sussex. My research focuses on the concept of feeling as ‘unknowing’ within the works of women writers from 1780-1830, including Mary Wollstonecraft, Frances Burney and Ann Radcliffe.

I am interested in and influenced by feminist scholarship and philosophy – particularly that of Hélène Cixous and Judith Butler – and often utilise and experiment with concepts such as performativity and the écriture féminine in my work.

My research focuses predominantly on gender and sexuality in women’s writing from the Romantic and Victorian eras, however I also frequently engage with ideas around class and capitalism within similar texts.

Outside of academia, I am a fully qualified secondary English teacher, and education remains something I am passionate about and wish to remain engaged in throughout my career.
