A Plan S for books: Voices from the Community

‘Voices from the OA Books Community’ was a series of interactive workshops run by the Open Access Books Network designed to collect a broad range of views on what a ‘Plan S’ policy for books should look like. The series began at the end of March 2021 and ran until the end of May 2021, with five sessions covering different policy aspects (scope, quality assurance and transparency, green OA for books, discoverability and metadata, rights retention and licensing).
The workshops were all free to attend, but we had to limit the number of places to 100 in order to run the sessions effectively. In order to enable as many people as possible to contribute to the project, we made the video recordings and notes from each session publicly available below, together with an open document for others to add their views outside of the main sessions.
The workshops included a presentation section and smaller discussions in breakout rooms, designed to gather voices from a wide range of perspectives on Open Access books. SPARC Europe then synthesised the discussions into a summary document to present to cOAlition S as they consider a Plan S for books.
More information about the workshops can be found here. More information about the Open Access Books Network can be found here.

Hi all, a blog post reflecting upon the outcomes of the Voices from the OA Books Community series is available to view here, and you can download the document that summarises the discussions here. This summary was shared with cOAlition S. We note that cOAlition S have recognised the OABN as a useful forum for community engagement in their statement released today, and we’re delighted that the effort made by the OABN community to engage constructively with cOAlition S has been recognised in this way. We look forward to exploring ways to foster more such constructive engagement via the OABN in future. All our forthcoming activities will continue to be announced via this Humanities Commons group and our website, as well as on Twitter (@oabooksnetwork).
