Roger Press replied to the topic Valuing publishing rights artist catalogues. Now David Bowie is virtually valued in the discussion MusicID Community on Humanities Commons 6 days ago
Well, joking about Bowie aside, we know Bob Dylan has sold his catalogue of publishing rights. So how do scholars and business people go about valuing these entities? One way is to use some sparkling new tools. Createsafe has developed one.
The simulator is a precalculation model. When I first went to work at EMI my job was to live in…[Read more]

The last week of February in the UK charts had a milestone that I personally was quite excited about: Scottish prog group Mogwai scored their first #1 album, As the Love Continues. This week, they’ve dropped to #23, but that’s still pretty good for Mogwai. Since their first release in 1997, they’ve had ever stronger…[Read more]
We are very excited to share our latest research video, a reworking of our old insight into Nirvana’s chart performance against Michael Jackson’s. You can read about it over on our blog, or get straight to it on YouTube here. If you’d rather read it than watch it, you can get the PDF from the blog post.
Anyone who has been in touch with us here at MusicID over the past few years has likely been walked through one of our favorite examples of a startling insight, in which we look at the Billboard 200 during the […]

A colleague of mine taught music management at the Sorbonne during the last 20 years. He is part of this free music industry education programme funded by the European Union and the EEA.
Just an FYI and you can share it, of course. I’m becoming a social media maven.

For the week ending February 12-13
Well, last week’s prediction that Morgan Wallen, who was recently dropped by his record label over his use of racial slurs, was not long for the top 40 turned out to be wrong. I should know better, with America. Dangerous sits at #1 for the fourth week.
The Hot 100 has no major changes in the top…[Read more]
Roger Press replied to the topic How does Eminem revenue change over the decade from 2010 to 2020? in the discussion MusicID Community on Humanities Commons 3 weeks, 3 days ago
This is a commentary on Napster by a wonderful professor at uPenn, Peter Fader and Wendy Moe, written twenty years ago. This is when piracy was becoming very widespread. This analysis of the CD market is instructional for users of big data. It shows how much information available to company executives was ignored back in those days. Today big data…[Read more]
Another bio. My old boss just updated me how much Bhaskar Menon was a mentor to him, even after retirement.
I worked at EMI last century, and my boss told me anecdotes about Bhaskar Menon. Of course he was known as the driving force behind Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon which was in the Billboard charts for 741 weeks.
This is his moving New York Times obituary which came out yesterday.

Roger Press started the topic And why is recorded music streaming declining in France? in the discussion MusicID Community on Humanities Commons 3 weeks, 4 days ago
I love the French. But what’s with the French? Can’t get my mind around this. The pandemic is leading to more and more streaming around the world. Why not France? It is their national character? Well let’s read Music Ally and do the work to understand this.

I listened to this great seminar yesterday, by Helena Kosinski at MRC Data. She is particularly interesting on Radio and the relationship of the different streaming services. It is astonishing to me what a hold radio still has over music consumption. All those top 40 stations make it nice and easy to listen.

Just in from the great people at Music Ally.
