“Illustrating Wagner’s Ring”, display curated by Jen Hill, Archives and Special Collections, ground floor, Baillieu Library, University of Melbourne

Illustrating Wagner’s Ring features depictions of characters and incidents from each of the four operas that comprise Richard Wagner’s operatic cycle The Ring of the Nibelung. Drawing on material held in the University’s Special collections—Rare Music, Rare Books and Prints—this small display is primarily of books and music scores from 1887-1913 when Jugendstil/Art nouveau was the dominant visual aesthetic. It is timed to coincide with the performances in Bendigo of the complete Ring cycle by Melbourne Opera, the first time it has been heard live in regional Australia and the beginning of Semester 1 at the University of Melbourne.
