      Dear members,

I wished to draw your attention to this recent publication by long-time WA MSA member Patricia Thorpe concerning Meta Overman, a composer of particular significance to Western Australia. I thought this might be of great interest to some of you.

      Kind regards
      Jonathan Paget

Thorpe, Patricia.  A Meeting of Two Worlds: The Life and Times of Composer Meta Overman (1907-1993). Wirripang Media Pty Ltd., 2021. Available at https://www.australiancomposers.com.au/products/meeting-of-two-worlds-the-life-and-times-of-the-composer-meta-overman.

This biography follows the life of Dutch-born Meta Overman from her birth in the old city of Rotterdam to the ‘new world’ of Australia (Perth and Melbourne). It examines the difficulties she faced in her adopted country; how they were resolved and what led to her being recognised as a contemporary composer worthy of a place in the annals of Australian musical history. This book uses original sources – music, letters, transcripts of conversations and other archival material and is well documented.
