I’m working on a project that does a deep, analytical dive into Max Roach’s style on “Clifford Brown and Max Roach.” In y’all’s opinion, what are the must-read sources for Max and/or this album? Happy to engage with analytical, biographical, ethnographic, musicological, review, magazine – any kind of source!

      Hi mate,

Do you have access to Oxford Music Online? There is a Grove article on him: https://doi.org/10.1093/gmo/9781561592630.article.A2257948

      It lists some useful sources:

      K. Larcombe: “The Great Jazz Masters, Part III: Kenny Clarke,” Modern Drummer, 8/2 (1980), 23–5, 79

      M. Davis with Q. Troupe: Miles: the Autobiography (New York, 1989)

      D. Gold: “Max Roach: a Great Drummer,” DB, 56/4 (1989), 39–43

      R. Spagnardi: The Great Jazz Drummers (Cedar Grove, NJ, 1992)

      D. Ansell: “Drums Unlimited,” JJI, 48 (1995), 41–2

      B. Korall: Drummin’ Men, the Heartbeat of Jazz: the Bebop Years (New York, 2002)

Can you get hold of these? If you need help tracking these down, let me know, I might be able to help.

      Cheers

      Fred
