      SYMPOSIUM: Picasso and Musical Modernity (c.1900-1940) – 12-14 October 2023

      Parador de Mojácar, Spain – University of Melbourne, Australia; Hybrid (in person and online)

      Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was a witness and frontline actor of the music currents developing in Barcelona, Paris, and other sites prior to World War II. Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death, this symposium will explore the mutual influences between the Visual arts (particularly in the orbit of Picasso) and Music, and how aspects of musical modernity emerged through the negotiation of different cultural, technical and stylistic parameters.

      Keynote Speakers: Walter Aaron Clark (Distinguished Professor of Musicology, University of California, Riverside); Ruth Piquer Sanclemente (Lecturer in Musicology, Universidad Complutense, Madrid); Caroline Potter (Visiting Reader in French Music, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire)

      Official languages: English and Spanish. Selected papers from the symposium will be published in a volume on Picasso and Musical Modernity.
