This is a scholarly working group for individuals interested in the life and works of composer Julia Perry. The goals of this group are to assist with the exchange of manuscripts, published works, and scholarship on Perry, as well as providing support for other members including offering feedback on projects; assisting with obtaining materials from libraries, archives, and similar institutions; and creating and updating bibliographies, discographies, lists of performances, works lists, and other such reference materials on Perry with information gleaned through individual research.

      The Arts and Humanities Research Council (UK) has awarded funding to Michael Harper, Principal Study Vocal Tutor at the Royal Northern Conservatory of Music, for work on Julia Perry.

      2. I’ll be talking about Perry’s opera The Selfish Giant at the Black Identities on the Operatic Stage: A Symposium with Music, March 26. I’ll be presenting remotely. I’m sorry to miss seeing everyone who will be there in person. I’m going to record my presentation and I will make it and the paper and slides available after the conference on my site.       Hello friends–

      I received an email this morning from Jay Berger of Carl Fischer, who asked for me to remove the copies of Perry’s Violin Concerto, for which the full score and the piano reduction are currently available on this site. I have asked him how I should go about asking for permission to continue to host these files here, especially considering that they are manuscript files for research purposes. I will let you know how this proceeds.

      Born March 25, 1924 in Lexington’s East End neighborhood, composer Julia Perry was an accomplished and internationally renowned composer with a robust collection of compositions. A pianist by training, Perry attended the Juilliard School of Music, received two Guggenheim fellowships in 1952 and 1954, and in the late 1960s, had her works performed by major orchestras including the New York Philharmonic.

      LexPhil performed several works by Julia Perry at our November 2021 concert Sorrow, Strength, & Love at the The Lyric Theatre & Cultural Arts Center, including one of her most well-known pieces Stabat Mater (1951) which she dedicated to her mother, Mrs. America Heath Perry. Our focus on Julia Perry continues next season, including a concert at African Cemetery No. 2 featuring chamber works by Julia Perry & Florence Price (Saturday, October 1, 2022), as well as her work Homunculus C.F.
