JIBS is a peer-reviewed, open access journal dedicated to publishing cutting edge articles that embody interdisciplinary, social justice-oriented, feminist, queer, and innovative biblical scholarship. We welcome submissions that challenge canonical and/or disciplinary norms and boundaries or that query the field of biblical studies’ relationship to the broader investigation of human religion, culture, and literature. JIBS will publish two issues a year in summer and in winter.

Meredith Warren deposited A Transgender Gaze at Genesis 38 in the group
Journal for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies on Humanities Commons 3 years, 2 months ago
While queer interpretation of the Hebrew Bible has begun to flourish, readings which focus particularly on trans and gender-diverse experiences remain lacking. In this article, I offer a trans reading of Gen 38, the Judah and Tamar narrative, drawing the text into dialogue with a trans hermeneutic. This allows me to reflect on trans and…[Read more]

Meredith Warren deposited Transgender: A Useful Category of Biblical Analysis? in the group
Journal for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies on Humanities Commons 3 years, 2 months ago
This paper revolves around issues of anachronism and identity in moving toward a transgender hermeneutic of interpretation. Putting Joan W. Scott’s work on gender as a category of historical analysis in conversation with María Lugones’ and Oyèrónkẹ́ Oyèwùmí’s discussions of gender and coloniality, the paper proposes the terminology of “gendered c…[Read more]

Philip J. Lowe deposited The Premise and Paraenesis: Rhetorical Studies and the Connection of the Christ Hymn with the Corresponding Paraenesis of Colossians in the group
Journal for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies on Humanities Commons 3 years, 5 months ago
Much has been written on the epistle to the Colossians. Much less has been written on Colossians and rhetoric. Even less has been written on the connection of praise and paraenesis found in the epistle. If the book of Colossians can be understood as epideictic rhetoric, then a connection between its paraenesis and the encomium to Christ…[Read more]

Philip J. Lowe deposited A Qualm About Q in the group
Journal for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies on Humanities Commons 3 years, 5 months ago
The Q hypothesis has long dominated the study of the Synoptics. It is often heralded as the key to Synoptic interpretation, yet it is simultaneously challenged at nearly every juncture. Regarding parable study, the Q hypothesis offers much by way of identifying redaction, but the impact of identifiable redaction is often overvalued. Those choosing…[Read more]

Meredith Warren deposited “Queer Eye” in Theology and Biblical Studies: “Do you have to be queer to do this?” in the group
Journal for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies on Humanities Commons 3 years, 8 months ago
This article addresses the question of whether one needs to be LGBTQ+ or queer-identifying in order to engage in queer studies in theology and biblical studies. In surveying the popularity of queer as cultural currency in the media and the academy, I express concern with queer studies being undertaken as if it were one approach among others,…[Read more]

Meredith Warren deposited There’s Nothing about Mary: The Insignificance of Mary in the Gospel of Thomas 114 in the group
Journal for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies on Humanities Commons 3 years, 8 months ago
Feminist approaches to early Christian texts have consistently evaluated female characters as the primary focus of analysis. Yet in doing so, placing the spotlight on the female figure inevitably pushes male figures, and by extension, the broader context to the margins. This type of analysis runs the risk of overemphasizing the role of a woman in…[Read more]

Meredith Warren deposited Sensuous Hermeneutics in the group
Journal for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies on Humanities Commons 3 years, 8 months ago
The single greatest impediment to clarity in hermeneutics arises from the intuition that words have meaning as a property. This essay will show an alternative to the hermeneutics of subsistent meaning, displaying a way to think about hermeneutics as an interplay of expression and apprehension. By learning about “meaning” from the more per…[Read more]

Meredith Warren deposited “Aware-Settler” Biblical Studies: Breaking Claims of Textual Ownership in the group
Journal for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies on Humanities Commons 3 years, 8 months ago
“Aware-Settler” is a term coined here to describe the various hermeneutics that arise as increasingly, non-Indigenous biblical scholars take seriously that their research is done on colonized Land. Paying special attention to the principle of possessiveness, the article suggests breaking stubborn Settler-scholar hidden-default assumptions of own…[Read more]

Meredith Warren deposited Bringing the Apostle Down to Earth: Emily Dickinson Wrestles with Paul in the group
Journal for Interdisciplinary Biblical Studies on Humanities Commons 3 years, 8 months ago
While Emily Dickinson included many allusions to the biblical texts in her writing, this article focuses on her engagement with one particular biblical writer—the apostle Paul. Dickinson makes a number of references to Paul in her letters and poetry, often in ways that thoroughly unbalance what she considered to be his spiritual and h…[Read more]
