      VOC #6 Sephardi v Ashkenazi

      Register here http://bit.ly/eca-voc

Hear from some exceptional practitioners from the UK and North America who have worked in both spheres and can explain.

This session is co-hosted by the Cantors Association of America and moderated by Daniel Tunkel

The European Cantors Association (ECA) is an independent organisation established in the United Kingdom in 2012. It is a framework for cantors, prayer leaders and interested lay people across the spectrum of Jewish worship – to engage in dialogue, training and profile-raising to ensure that the beautiful and unique music of Jewish prayer, continues to enhance synagogue services for future generations. ECA arranges conventions in UK and European cities and is presenting a zoom series ‘The Voice of the Cantor’. Its Academic Wing presents International Conferences on the music of Jewish prayer in partnership with Universities around the world. Website: Website http://www.cantors.eu Director, Alex Klein alex@cantors.eu

Moderator Daniel Tunkel  Daniel Tunkel has had a lifelong interest in Jewish music. He is a keen ba’al t’filah, ba’al kriyah and chorister and is actively involved in composing and arranging music for choir, solo voice and other ensembles.  A lawyer with a major London law firm, Daniel divides his time between London and Israel, where his wife Rachel is based, and with whom he has a street music flute duet. He is in the process of transferring his late father Victor Tunkel’s significant Jewish Music collection to the Leo Baeck institute Library in London, according to Victor’s wishes.

VOC #7 Who needs Nusach? Part 1

What do we mean by nusach and wherein lies its importance? Is this centuries-old tradition, the immutable structure for the music of Ashkenazi prayer? Or is the melody of the synagogue more changeable and less constant than we think? Is it OK to introduce modern Israeli tunes? Carlebach tunes? Secular songs or even the latest pop song?

Join a panel of cantors and Rabbis from around the world inured in the British Commonwealth tradition to discuss

Cantor Asher Hainowitz Yeshurun Synagogue, Jerusalem

Rabbi Cantor Geoffrey Shisler  Teacher and Rabbi/Cantor (retired)

Charles Heller writer and retired choirmaster Toronto

Rabbi Benjy Rickman, Holy Law Synagogue, Manchester
