Call for Participation: Jewish Music Research Group

The newly established Jewish Music Research Group, housed in the International Foundation for Theory and Analysis of World Musics, invites participation from anyone with research interests in the theory and analysis of Jewish music (broadly defined). The Jewish Music Research Group is a non-profit, autonomous organization that may engage in a range of activities such as collaborative analysis projects, special sessions conference and symposium opportunities, special issue publications, and  interdisciplinary connections with other Jewish music research organizations.

An initial general information/planning session will be scheduled for early October (via Zoom). Please contact Rosa Abrahams (rabrahams@ursinus.edu) if you’re interested in attending this meeting. Scholars of any career stage, disciplinary affiliation, and geographical location are welcome!

        Greetings, David,

My apologies, somehow I completely missed your Humanities Commons message in advance of our first meeting, which was in October. If you can let me know your preferred email address, I’ll be happy to send you the minutes from the meeting, so you can see what we discussed.

The group decided to begin the group activities by discussing materials dealing with Jewish music analysis as a type of study group. As such, we’re meeting again on December 3rd  from 2-4pm EDT to discuss Chapter 5 of Joel Rubin’s new book, and two short klezmer pieces that are not in the book. We’ll also spend some time at the beginning of the meeting talking about a mission statement and revised group title (there was much discussion on this in the previous meeting).

If you’re interested in joining us on the 3rd, let me know and I’ll forward the chapter PDF and recording links via email. Again, I’m so sorry to have missed your earlier message and I hope you’ll be able to participate in the group in the future!

        Best, Rosa
