‘Bloch and Menuhin’ Wednesday 12 May 2021 5.00pm UK time
Join Malcolm Singer to hear about the close relationship between composer Ernest Bloch and Violinist Yehudi Menuhin
Yehudi pithily said of Ernest Bloch that he ‘was my first composer and I was his last performer.’ Indeed, Bloch’s Abodah was the first piece written especially for the young Yehudi in 1928, and the violinist commissioned the two suites for solo violin just before the composer’s death in 1959; the second Suite was Bloch’s last completed work. This Bloch Study Session will explore a thirty-year relationship that was significant for both of these great musicians.
Malcolm Singer is well-known as a composer, conductor, and educationalist. He was Director of Music at The Yehudi Menuhin School for 19 years (1998-2017) and Musical Director of the Zemel Choir for 10 years (1983-1993). He teaches Composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Malcolm trained the choirs for Bloch’s Sacred Service in St Pauls Cathedral that was conducted by Yehudi Menuhin (and attended by Prince Philip in 1995)
The IEBS Bloch Study Sessions take place on the second Wednesday of every month, via Zoom at 09:00 Pacific time / 12.00 Eastern USA / 17:00 UK / 18:00 Western Europe / 19:00 Israel (The room will open 10 minutes early for greetings and socialising).
