Professor Philip Ewell (City University of New York Graduate Center, Hunter College) spoke last fall at an SMT meeting about racism in the field of music theory and also recently published an article in SMT’s online journal on the topic. The Graduate Center this week published a piece about his talk, his paper, and the controversy surrounding it, and asked him for ideas on how his field and higher ed in general might begin taking steps toward “antiracism,” to borrow a term from Ibram Kendi.
