Melissa Hyde & Eric J. Segal, “Women and the Nature of Impressionism” (2015).

This short essay for the Harn Museum of Art exhibition catalog Monet and American Impressionism (February 2015) focuses on women and on gender. The authors take up this line of inquiry in order to think about a selection of images by French and American Impressionists who were part of the art colony at Giverny that grew up around Monet in the 1880s and 1890s. The essay discusses what these paintings can tell us about cultural understandings of women, both in the depiction of women as painted subjects and as agents who render images of their own.
