• God the Father: Religious and militaristic rhetoric in the construction of patriarchal traditionalist masculinities

    Abstract:
    The role of the internet in fomenting male supremacist ideology must be understood within the larger cultural context that undergirds and naturalizes such rhetoric. Traditional conservative (TradCon) sections of the manosphere valorize a patriarchal social order centering traditional gender roles. According to TradCon reasoning, men, under attack by monstrous feminists and a sick society, are at a crossroads. They can surrender to a false denigration of masculinity or reclaim their rightful place as leaders inside and outside the home. Part of a larger project tracing different subsets of the manosphere’s core beliefs about gender, power, and entitlement, this paper defines mythos-inflected logic and proposes a methodology of critical feminist mythography, using these concepts to analyze the role of religious and militaristic rhetoric in constructing a patriarchal good within the digital content produced for sites It’s Good to Be a Man, Masculine by Design and The Family Alpha.
