    Abstract:
The lone scientist, toiling away over a Bunsen burner at midnight or huddled in the comer of his garage with a few tools, has long held a place in the American psyche. As tempting as this noble image is, the truth is often much more mundane. Scientists typically work in groups, with ideas flowing among members of the group in an often unaccounted for manner, each idea building on the one before. Thus, inventions often have multiple inventors, each responsible for a minor aspect of the final invention.
