- Abstract:
- In the forty years since publication, Yambo Ouologuem’s Le Devoir de violence continues to engage scholars and critics who consider, among other things, the novel’s authenticity as well as its treatment of the sexual and colonial subject. This essay will instead re-examine the charge of plagiarism against the author and explore how Ouologuem “plays” with his reader by repositioning the idea of the “real” within history and sexual desire. The result is a multi-faceted and hybrid view of both sex and the colonial subject as Ouologuem tries to break the rules of both the African oral tradition and French literary norms.
