    Abstract:
    This article is an exploration of present-tense, first-person reverence for life as a conscious spiritual path. While promising to hold certain beliefs, or to embody certain virtues, for the rest of one's life, may be done with the best of intentions, my experience has been that we are not entirely in control of the persons we may become in the future. The Twelve Vows suggest an attitude of "watering the roots" of spiritual virtues, rather the "promising the fruits."
