- Abstract:
- With Thomas Hobbes’ political iconography in the background, Kadir Nelson’s recent cover for The New Yorker evokes what Charles Mills calls “the racial contract.” Nelson’s George Floyd rises out of the landscape of Black history much like Hobbes’ sovereign, but Floyd — in stark contrast to Hobbes’ sword-bearing “person of the State” — is, quite literally, an unarmed man.
