- Abstract:
- Manuel del Socorro Rodriguez is presented here as a foundational figure regarding the formulation of the Colombian literary canon. It is maintained that his essay from 1792: “Satisfacción a un juicio poco exacto sobre la literatura y buen gusto, antiguo y actual, de los naturales de la ciudad de Santafé de Bogotá” [Satisfaction of a not quite accurate judgement on ancient and current literature and good taste by the naturals from the city of Santa Fe de Bogotá]” is the direct antecedent to the history of literature in Colombia. This essay of his is also seen as one of the first systematic attempts to configure the canon of any national literature in Hispanic America. Since such canon was formulated in a colonial environment, the lack of legitimation by a national community as a whole is thus considered.
