- Abstract:
- Shakespearean tragedies and comedies have been adapted to the silver screen in India, Malaysia, Tibet, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, and Japan. How do Shakespeare and modern directors talk to each other across cultural and historical divides? Why are particular strategies used or themes emphasized? How are pre-linguistic structures of spectacle and music appropriated along with dramatic narratives in Shakespeare and the new screenplay? This chapter introduces readers to the rich contexts and visual texts of Asian film adaptations of Shakespeare through a thematic account and case studies of select films. Shakespeare has been a part of the film and popular cultures of various Asian countries, with Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, and Hamlet at the center of cinematic imaginations. Along with other chapters in the book, this chapter will enrich readers’ understanding of world cinema and Shakespeare.
