I am an Assistant Professor of English at UC Irvine, and a senior editor at Hyphen magazine, which I also co-founded. My research and writing focus on 20/21st c. Anglophone and Asian/American cultural production, speculative fiction, and racial formation. I received my PhD in English literature from UC Berkeley in 2016, and was formerly a UC Chancellor’s postdoctoral fellow in the English department at UC Riverside. In addition to Hyphen, my writing has appeared or is forthcoming in American Quarterly, the Journal of Asian American Studies, the Journal of Transnational American Studies, Post45: Peer Reviewed, and The New Inquiry.

I am an art historian specializing in the visual culture of the Dutch Golden Age. My research focuses on urban identity and sociopolitical agency as expressed in paintings and prints produced after the Protestant Reformation. My work interlaces visual analysis and political history with urban theory to trace how self-perceptions of our role and worth in urban communities influence our visual enagagement with the world.

I am a postdoctoral fellow with the University of California Institute for Mexico and the United States (UC MEXUS). My work explores, among other things, the intersection of aurality and gender, strategic vulnerability in musical performance, and what I call the transmusical–the under-explored areas between culturally-inflected definitions of “music” and “sound.” My current work concerns the socio-cultural aspects of whistle languages in contemporary Mexico City. In my free time I study requinto jarocho and tres cubano and make music with the experimental pop group, The Fantastic Toes.
