DepositHellenism/Modernism: Negotiating Modernisms and the Philhellene in Greece

Philhellenism in modernist literature is familiar. I examine Lawrence Durrell’s works, locating him between Eliot’s Classicism (perhaps the hegemonic Modernism) and the Greek authors who responded to Eliot. Through his ties to Greek Modernists and Parisian Surrealists, Durrell contributed to the Anglo-American tradition in a mode that reflects the influence of what George Seferis, the Nobel Laureate for 1963, later called “the Greek style.” This places Durrell at a point of tension between competing movements.

DepositCFP: Global Modernisms and the Graphic

Douglas Mao and Rebecca Walkowitz’s field-defining article, “The New Modernist Studies,” turns ten in 2018. Despite the fact that the article takes up new media as a key topic-and although it was published just after ground-breaking work in the “visual turn” of literary studies by Mary Lou Emery (Modernism, the Visual, and Caribbean Literature, 2007), W. J. T. Mitchell (Picture Theory, 2005), Michael North (Camera Works, 2005), Mark Wollaeger (Modernism, Media and Propaganda, 2006)-theories and discussions of global modernism since have focused considerably more energy on modernism’s geographic and temporal dimensions than its relation to the graphic. Yet film, pictures, images, and other graphic modes frequently appear in the criticism of global modernism as well as at the scenes of literary modernist production. Our panel invites papers that explore how the graphic might refine or critique global modernist studies. We are especially interested in papers that address this issue with regard to topics such as empire, gender, race, global capitalism, and/or the anthropocene. John Milton is a hero to Millennials: C. S. Lewis based Perelandra on Paradise Lost; Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials Trilogy mirrors the epic; Mark Morris’s best ballet is “L’Allegro and Il Penseroso”; digital artist Terrance Lindall created virtual images of Paradise Lost for the Oxford U. Press; Comus is the originator and lead Krewe for the New Orleans Carnival, and the name of an acoustic-art rock band. Paradise Lost provides the basis for one of the most successful recent video games, The Talos Principle, in which Milton plays a major character. His autobiographical recoveries from failed ambition provide therapy for modern trauma. We cover, audio-visually, the relevance of Sonnets, Lycidas, Comus, Paradise Lost (Books 1 & 2, 9 & 10), Paradise Regained (Book IV), and Samson Agonistes.
